Prime Minister Kristen Michal met with representatives of the Estonian Defence and Aerospace Industry Association to discuss opportunities for cooperation between the defence industry and the state. Michal stressed that the development of the defence industry is important for national security and economic recovery.
Taavi Veskimägi, Chairman of the Defence and Aerospace Industries Association Council, stressed that the new government’s coalition agreement highlights the importance of the local defence industry for Estonia’s defence capabilities. He believes that this principle should also be reflected in the National Defence Act, linking local industry to the development of national defence capabilities and involving them in the planning process. In 15 years, the Estonian defence industry has reached a level where ten companies are producing solutions to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression. This demonstrates Estonia’s ability to develop world-class technologies and tools, create new jobs, boost exports and stimulate the economy. Veskimägi stresses that this requires security for defence companies and a long-term partnership with the state.
